World ARC Yacht "Asolare" Leg 4, Day 3

Tuesday 11th March 2008

The sailing is still good with 9 to 10 knots of gentle breeze from the SE and a very useful current in our favour of 1.3 knots. Despite the low 5 knot apparent wind we are doing about 6 knots over the ground.

It is interesting to note that all the yachts to the north of our position have the same or better current but less wind, and all the yachts to the South of our position have less or no current but more wind!

It is a bit of a balancing act but I favour getting to the higher wind area despite loosing the current. We are therefore sailing at 225 deg rather than the 252 deg which we would need to steer to go directly to the Marquesas still, 2650 miles away!

I could not find out yesterday how to put two photos into the same “frame” despite several hours of frustrating trials with Abode Elements 5. The instructions always seem to leave out a vital step that should be obvious to any computer savvy photo programme user – which clearly does not include myself! Please see yesterday’s log.

I am therefore attaching a photo of myself very shortly after my too close encounter with a white tipped large shark who seemed to think my right glove was edible (and me inside it). You can see the glove is almost fully off my right hand!

“Go and see what the Tiger’s can do” Harry Ramsbottom’s famous request to his son Albert! – comes to mind!
